Passion and Dedication of the Craftsman
With its Shinjuku site chosen for the clear waters of the Kanda River, Tomita Sen-Kogei is a workshop with more than 140 years of history creating fabrics such as some-komon (fine-patterned dyeing) and sarasa (chintz). Now, in a departure from the shades traditionally considered chic in some-komon, they use skilled techniques to combine existing dyes in delicate ways, giving birth to a new way to be chic through rich, bright colors: the SARAKICHI KOMON POUCH. This pouch series is all about the beauty of the three sides with totally different patterns on each, something never seen on traditional some-komon.
Bright colors in some-komon, which usually uses subdued tones, require a high level of technical skill. Subtle changes were made, including revising the distribution of dye powders to ensure the colors did not run beyond the pattern edges. Repeated applications of paste then dye create brighter tones.
