Bamboo + traditional "washi" paper + "urushi" lacquer are a beautiful fusion. "Urushi" lacquer has been an intimate part of Japanese life since ancient times, as an adhesive for joining things, and a coating to increase robustness. And "Ikkannuri wo Mochiita Kaki" (the flower bowl made from Ikkan coating) was born through the encounter of "urushi" with bamboo and "washi". Both the cylindrical vase and basin flower bowl are wrapped with a bamboo basket woven by a Beppu bamboo craftsman. To this, a lacquering and wiping technique called "tamé-urushi-nuri" is repeated over and over to create a deep lustrous finish. The function of Ikkan is to hold water. In the initial trial, the coating was applied to the outer surface of the vase as well(a). However, only a portion of the inside of the vase was coated in order to leverage the beauty and lightness of the woven design inherent to bamboo crafts. Willow green has been chosen as the colour for the low profile flower bowl, so that the Ikkan coated portion does not stand out over the flowers arranged in it. For the cylindrical vase, the iron plate at the bottom is solidified with lacquer so that the vase does not tilt by the weight of the flowers. The top of the basin flower bowl is formed like a lid so that various expressions can be enjoyed according to the types of flowers it holds. With or without flowers, both are truly elegant for the interior.
