The Culmination of a life in Rattan
Rattan is a plant of the palm family inhabiting only in Southeast Asia. The material familiar to the knitting crafts in Japan is “bamboo”. Although there is only rattan can do but not in bamboo. Because it is lighter, stronger and more resilient, it has been used in Japan since long ago.
The technique that rattan can make such as “rolling” or “trimming” is not applying the feature of bamboo. For example, rattan is used also in the “bow of Shigeto” carried by medieval warlords, the handle of a spear, a whistle, a shakuhachi(flute) and others.
In the Edo period, Ajiro patterned hat and pillow were made of rattan.
Masanori Horie entered this rattan craft world was when he was in elementary school. From relatives who has business with rattan material, he was apprenticing craftsmen while attending school. At the time of training, he was making Rattan carpet, then gradually widen his products line-ups.
His career is going to be 70 years soon, and his technology is very rich and started to hand over to his son Masatoshi who is second generation also his granddaughter.
And it is a rattan made bag with a shape of a climbing top that positions itself as “culmination” as a rattan craftsman. The appearance of casual image of rattan bag has elegant style, because it is made from the craftsman who knew the rattan. All his experiences and skills are joined in the rattan products.
