Ogura Sengei, Ltd. Tokyo Hand-Painted Yuzen (Kimono)

Tokyo hand-painted yuzen is one of the three major yuzens along with Kyo yuzen and Kaga yuzen. Tokyo hand-painted yuzen is characterized by the sophisticated beauty and elegance developed in Edo, where the use of color and pattern was limited due to the enforcement of the sumptuary law after yuzen were introduced from Kyoto in the late Edo period. Ogura Sengei was founded in 1928. Takashi Ogura is the third generation to take over the family business from his grandfather and father. Although he had joined a sporting goods company, at the age of 27, he was impressed by the work of his father Teiyu’s work and became his apprentice.

Ogura Sengei boasts of its original ink developed by the second generation heir. The color called shibukiiro (subdued yellow) is mixed with the paste called itome-nori , which is used for resist dyeing. Then, the edges of the paste, which are supposed to be white or indigo become slightly yellow, which deepens the colors of the dyed goods and gives them a soft look.
