24 Edo Katchu (Warrior Armour)

A Master Craftswoman Succeeding the Timeless Virtues of Armor and Helmets
Skills and Techniques Cultivated Over a More Than 120-year History, Ensuring Remarkable Reproducibility

Kojin is a long-established company that began its operations in 1897 (Meiji 30) and has celebrated over 120 years in business. Now in its fifth generation, the company’s legacy is built on tireless research and refinement of the exquisite craftsmanship handed down from the founder. We carry on in this tradition in the hopes of bringing good health, peace, and prosperity to the next generation of children. Crafted with meticulous techniques reminiscent of armor-making, this item blends design methods that test both precision and sensibility. The unique touch of a female katchu artisan (Japanese armor maker) has resulted in an everyday usability that makes these pieces both practical and a delight to always keep close at hand.

Chikaraishi Kojin, our fifth-generation artisan, has inherited and mastered the globally acclaimed techniques and the rich aesthetic beauty from the late Heian period to the Kamakura period in creating ceremonial armor and helmets. Eschewing the word ‘compromise,’ the armor and helmets not only represent a masterclass of skill, technique, and precision reproduction, but also combine a rich imagination with unparalleled originality, earning acclaim as works of art, a valuable historical expression that goes beyond being mere traditional festival decorations.
