Katchu made with love

Beautifully formed O-yoroi (large armor, katchu) with vividly colored decorations is an ultimate piece of craftsmanship made by combining the great traditional techniques of metalwork, lacquerwork, dyeing and weaving, and leatherwork. For more than 120 years since its foundation establishment in 1897, Koujin Co., Ltd., has been studying the techniques and materials used to make the Heian and Kamakura era katchus designated national treasures and making katchus that imitate the details of these katchus.

Katsuyo Goto, the fifth generation heir, says, “Heian and Kamakura katchus are the most beautiful.” She is the only female katchu maker in Japan and is involved in every step of the katchu making process. “I don’t find difficult because I like making katchus. We use the techniques that have been passed down for generations in every detail, and the best part of our katchus is everything.” The lines on the kabuto bowls are made one by one by using the drawing technique on a metal plate. Fine techniques are used to vary the width of the lines slightly from the top to the bottom.

Although katchus are considered something for men, Koujin Co., Ltd., makes bags and accessories for women so that they can experience the beauty of katchus. “Although many people take away and store katchus after the Boys’ Day, I’ve always wanted people to appreciate and love them every day. We have incorporated beautiful odoshi, a design used in katchus, in into bags and accessories that women can use on a daily basis; therefore, I want women to use and love them in their daily lives.” Katchu, a symbol of love for children, changes its form and spreads love.
