Even now, when most brushes are machine-made, Tokyo Teue Brush remain committed to manual planting. The hand-planted brush is made by tufting continuously with a stainless steel pull wire referred to as Hikisen, making it significantly more durable than machine-planted brushes, which have the bristles planted hole by hole. Brush manufacturers in Tokyo continue the traditional art of hand-tufting, consistently producing high-quality brushes to this day.
Since 1917 (Taisho 6), Uno Hake Brush Manufacturing has been producing and selling hake (traditional Japanese brushes) based on the techniques it has cultivated over a century of brush making. Third-generation artisans Chieko Uno and her daughter Michiyo work together to preserve this traditional craftsmanship.
The hake brush has been crafted since ancient times as an applicator, much like lacquer brushes. In contrast, the history of the modern brush is relatively recent, with its production beginning around 1874 (Meiji 7), taking inspiration from French-made brushes. The creation of this product involves the expertise of traditional brush artisans. At Uno Hake Brush Manufacturing, during the time of the previous generation, the focus was primarily on making hake. Gradually, the company began to respond to evolving demands by starting to produce modern brushes.
Tokyo hand-planted brushes are highly regarded overseas. In addition to traditional brushes, the company continues to create innovative products that incorporate modern design and playful creativity to meet the needs of the times.
