Togidashi, Polished Glassware for Special Occasions

One of the techniques of Edo Kiriko: Hira-kiriko (flat cut glass). The flat polishing of a Hira-kiriko craftsman creates reflections within the glass, crafting contemporary patterns. This edition of togidashi differs from the traditional Edo Kiriko, which typically employs colored overlay glass, instead having recycled cullet attached to the exterior material. Polishing it flat, with the hira kiriko’s flat cut, creates a brilliant world with the reflection and refraction of light. The first edition features Edo murasaki (Edo purple), an elegant color favored by true Edo residents, which is perfect as a festive sake cup for special occasions.
Hirakiriko refers to a style of Edo Kiriko cutting that forms flat surfaces rather than carved lines, and it is one of the traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko. Hirakiriko is also referred to as “Hiramono.” The technique of creating flat surfaces in Edo Kiriko is extremely demanding, and it is said that fewer than ten artisans in Japan today specialize in Hirakiriko. This advanced flat-surface polishing technique creates a beautiful interplay of light through reflection and refraction. The “Togidashi” technique produces a jewel-like brilliance by meticulously polishing sixteen upper and sixteen lower facets—creating a finish unlike anything seen before.
