TOKYO Teshigoto

Founded in 1898. Mukasa Hyouguten has passed down for generations the mounting techniques indispensable for hanging scrolls, folding screens, frames, fusuma and shoji, which form the traditional furnishings of Japan. With a history of more than 120 years dedicated to mountings in Urawa, they now offer craftworks that harmonize with modern lifestyles, built on traditional mounting techniques passed down through four generations. They worked on the Urawa City Public Hall, completed in 1916 and now known as Kyokei-kan after the name bestowed on it by Eiichi Shibusawa, and a piece of construction scrap with "Hangings Artist: Mukasa" serves as proof of their involvement.

They are currently actively working to develop new fields along with incorporating new techniques and materials. Mukasa frames works by famous people, creates hanging scrolls and folding screens, creates interiors for Japanese-style rooms, restores and re-binds old books for temples and shrines, and also creates artworks that draw on their mounting techniques. The fourth-generation master, Atsushi Mukasa, has served as a director of the Tokyo Association of Traditional Mounting and Interior Arts, to which more than 150 mounting artisans from the Kanto region belong, since 2023, and also focuses on revitalizing the industry and training the next generation.
