Artisans Showcase Exquisite Craftsmanship in Interior Finishing and Mounting

Muromachi through the Momoyama and Edo periods. The reason that calligraphy and paintings from centuries ago are still beautifully preserved today is due to the traditional art of mounting, which involves reinforcing and restoring the original paper of the artwork and its surroundings with fabric and Japanese washi paper. The materials for mounting are simple: washi paper, fabric, water, and glue. However, it demands years of dedicated practice to master the delicate handling of paper and the precise brushwork. For this reason, the art of mounting is often referred to as “the art of water and brushwork.” The names of master craftsmen and skilled artisans in the mounting field are scarcely recorded, indicating their steadfast dedication to working behind the scenes.

Kamiyama Hyogu has been in business for 80 years in Ota Ward, Tokyo, since its founding as a traditional mounting and framing shop. Around the Showa 40s (the 1960s), as the number of homes with fusuma and byobu decreased, the practice of using washi for wallpaper began. This is one of the very rare workshops that employs traditional techniques to repair byobu, fusuma, and wallpaper.
Our company is deeply rooted in the local community as we specialize in interior decoration and mounting. Our craftsmen, who hold national qualifications certified by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, expertly apply their specialized skills to a wide range of products, including wallpaper, folding screens, hanging scrolls, and screen doors. With unparalleled techniques, we deliver the joy of living with precision and care.
