The designs created by Tokyo yuzen maker Miyuki Ohno’s designs, including those with the theme Hyakki Yako (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), are modern and charming while retaining the Japanese quality of Ukiyo-e. “I like crossovers, integrating something classical, that is, something old and something modern.” She studied architecture at an art college and was intrigued by an article on a yuzen maker that she found in a freesheet about a yuzen maker. She then looked for a place to learn yuzen dyeing. After graduating from a vocational college, she became an apprentice to Kamakura yuzen maker Norihito Sakai. She founded Yukiya Co., Ltd., in 2017.

Ms. Ohno’s crossovers are not only in the designs she creates. “I want to create yuzen that we can sell at a reasonable price, but we would be financially exhausted if we tried to create a large number of inexpensive products.” Through a process of trial and error, she developed Digital Yuzen with Digina Co., Ltd. Designs hand-drawn on fabric are scanned and digitally reprinted using a high-resolution printer without skipping the yuzen dyeing process. She says, “If we can mass-produce yuzen products, it will be easier for people to buy them. We can focus our efforts on making fine yuzen products one at a time.” “I would like to introduce yuzen to people around the world by using digital technologies while working harder to create hand-painted yuzen products.” Tokyo hand-painted yuzen will transcend Japan’s traditional culture and make its way to the world.
