Tadayasu Katchu: Embracing the Spirit of Japan through Traditional Craftsmanship

Between the 8th and 12th centuries, as warriors began to fight on horseback, a type of Katchu (samurai armor) known as o-yoroi emerged, designed to protect the entire body from arrows. In contrast to the glittering Katchu armor of Kyoto, Edo Katchu draws inspiration from o-yoroi, which is characterized by its heavy design and its “shitsujitsu goken”, or simple and sturdy construction. We faithfully reproduce it based on meticulous historical research.

Okoshi Chu Mfg has been in business for over fifty years. In the traditions of our founder, we at Tadayasu have been dedicated for decades to the singular pursuit of crafting Katchu. The armor that Tadayasu reproduces goes beyond mere weaponry, to beautifully express the Japanese spirit. It is a comprehensive work of art that brings together the masterful techniques of metalwork, lacquerware, dyeing, and leather craftsmanship. In order to replicate this traditional craft in the modern era, each piece is meticulously handcrafted with heartfelt dedication, utilizing skills cultivated over many years of study and application.

The enduring high regard for Tadayasu Katchu stems from the unwavering confidence in the skill refined through many years of experience, and the sincere passion dedicated to the craft of Katchu-making. It is a testament to the profound knowledge, exceptional technique, and heartfelt commitment invested in the creation of each piece. Above all, the meticulous historical research involved is unparalleled, with extensive examination of vast amounts of materials and thorough scrutiny and consideration of every detail, incorporating as much information as possible into the crafting of our Katchu.
