“Edo Sky”: Where Traditional Dyeing Meets Modern Printing

The “Edo Sky,” painted by Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige in the Edo period, is recreated through the traditional Bokashi Zome technique, in which skilled artisans pour colors by hand to create soft, flowing gradients. Additionally, a delicate Mount Fuji motif is printed in fine foil, adding a subtle, elegant shimmer. Enjoy the shifting hues of the Edo sky, woven through the harmony of traditional dyeing and modern printing techniques. As a tapestry, it can be hung on the wall to bring a gentle, elegant atmosphere to any space.
In this piece, rather than a single artisan handling the dyeing process, two artisans work in perfect harmony to dye simultaneously, creating more delicate and beautifully blended gradations. This expresses the changing skies of Edo in deeper, richer tones. This tenugui is made from “Tokuoka” fabric—fabric with character used for yukata—giving it an exceptionally smooth, soft texture. The edges are neatly sewn to prevent fraying, ensuring durability and long-lasting use.
