17Edo Sudare

#

Sudare (slatted blinds) are made by arranging natural materials such as bamboo, reeds, and hagi (Japanese knotweed) side by side and weaving them together with thread. The blinds can be hung from eaves or windows and used as a sunshade, privacy screen or even as an interior room divider. While Kyō Sudare (Kyoto-style blinds) feature elaborate designs influenced by court noble culture, Edo Sudare (Edo-style blinds) cater to everyday life with a focus on practicality and simplicity.
