Preserving the culture of Boys’ Day by displaying Edo katchus

Katchus (armor) of May dolls are displayed on Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day) as part of the prayers and celebrations for the healthy growth of boys. The production of Edo katchus involves as many as 5,000 processes just like real katchus. In Ohkoshichu Seisakusho, which was founded in 1964, the craftsmen put their heart and soul into each process. Yasuhiro Ohkoshi, the current president, is the third-generation heir and his grandmother, Chu Ohkoshi, is the founder.

Though Although Yasuhiro worked for another company, he wanted to do a job that only he could do by acquiring expertise, so he made up his mind. He started making Edo katchus, fulfilling grandmother’s wishe that he take over the family business if possible.

Ohkoshichu Seisakusho is committed to careful historical research. They conduct verifications by paying attention to every detail and study an enormous amount of materials to reflect the results in the making of katchus. Ohkoshichu Seisakusho has recently released original katchus inspired by video games and fictional stories, samurai battle helmets, and katchu watches using the techniques they have developed.

“We can’t lose the Tango no Sekku culture of displaying katchus as part of the prayers and celebrations for the growth of children in our generation. To this end, I will continue to take on new challenges.” He will continue the tradition that has been passed down to him from the founder to the next generation.
