Tegaki-Yuzen Suminagashi (Hand-painted Yuzen marbling)

06 Tokyo Yuzen (Kimono)

Marbling and hand-painted Yuzen. A pattern like this cannot be found anywhere else in the world.  Marbling involves drawing a pattern with pigment floating on the water surface. When the pigment drops into the water, it moves silently across the surface, and when two or more pigments combine, they are suddenly drawn towards each other and create a mysterious pattern while exhibiting their movements like sparklers. And that pattern, by capturing the right moment in the movement, is transferred onto the silk. The technique of marbling has been secretly passed down from father to son. “Someno Takakou”, which has worked on numerous types of dyeing, has independently established this technique through several trials and errors from the current generation. The design, like fireworks suddenly spreading inside a water pattern, has a uniqueness that is particular to this generation. This one-and-only marbling design is accompanied by a hand-painted Yuzen design to give it more prominence. And this one-and-only shawl is the result of this unique encounter of the two.
